This male water buffalo was chasing off a smaller male that was on his territory when we saw him come out of the lake. He is one of the males that is old enough to have his own territory, whereas the other water buffalo going into his territory were looking for a place to set their boundaries. This guy was just wallowing in the shallows of the lake, using his large hooves not to sink into the mud. I think that this was cool because it was showing us what happens when their territory is being invaded. These two are two young male water buffalo, who don’t yet have territory of their own. And since they do not have their own territory they hang out with the female herd. Once they are old enough they will go claim their own territory. This water buffalo is probably a few years from getting his own territory. The water buffalo also eat aquatic plants along with normal grasses. I find this really cool that when they grow up they get their own territory.
